Ultraprecision Machining of Large Aperture Mirrors Using Robot-Enabled CCOS and MRF for Astronomical Telescopes and Space Instrumentation

Abstract

Large aperture ultra-precision mirrors are critical components in next-generation astronomical telescopes such as the China Space Station Telescope(CSST) and the MUltiplexed Survey Telescope(MUST). However, traditional 5/6-axis CNC "Box machines" combined with sub-aperture polishing techniques (CCOS, MRF, IBF) face challenges in cost-effectiveness for large-scale production. This presentation introduces a robotic polishing system integrating Computer-Controlled Optical Surfacing (CCOS) and Magnetorheological Finishing (MRF), developed by Prof. Zhang Xuejun's team at Changchun Institute of Optics, Fine Mechanics and Physics (CIOMP), to address these challenges.

About the speaker

Xuejun Zhang received his Ph.D. degree from Changchun Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics (CIOMP) in 1997. He is now the President of CIOMP and academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering. Dr. Zhang has been engaged in optical system design, manufacturing, and testing for more than 30 years, and led his team in achieving a major breakthrough in the high-precision manufacturing technology of 4.03 meter SiC mirrors. He was supported and rewarded by the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars (NSFC), the Qian Xuesen Outstanding Contribution Award of the China Aerospace Foundation, and the Science and Technology Award of the Chinese Society for Space Science. Dr. Zhang is a Fellow of SPIE, Chinese Optical Society, Chinese Society for Optical Engineering and Optica. He has published 187 peer-reviewed papers.
