About the speaker

John Kormendy holds the Curtis T. Vaughan, Jr. Centennial Chair in Astronomy at The University of Texas at Austin. Well known for his work on supermassive black holes at the centers of massive galaxies, he has done substantial work in the study of galactic bulges, the evolution of elliptical galaxies, and dark matter halos of galaxies. He received his doctorate in astronomy from the California Institute of Technology. Before coming to The University of Texas in 2000, he served on the faculties of The University of Hawaii?s Institute for Astronomy and the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory in Canada.
