Adaptive Optics the other way round: pre-correcting the uplink

Noelia Martínez Rey

Abstract

The main topic of my PhD is the use of Adaptive Optics techniques to pre-correct the self-propagating path of lasers in both applications, optical communications Earth-Satellite and the improvement of Laser Guide Star generation. Instead of correcting the atmospheric wavefront in the data coming from the sky (conventional AO), the goal of our research is adding certain aberration to a laser beam travelling from the ground to the space, or to the Sodium layer, in a way these on-purpose superimposed aberrations will counteract, to the possible extent, the effects the light undergoes when traversing the atmosphere. In this talk, I would like to offer a simplistic view of the system with a large introduction summarising the main concepts in AO and the results we've just achieved at the OGS telescope last May. There will be a lot of nice and green laser images!
